April 15th, 1919
The dance was overall pleasant five nights ago. I danced a little with a few out of town boys. And they were pleasant. I didn’t dance with anyone from Biloxi. We didn’t stay out too late and I admit that I was a little disappointed. They usually don’t come home so early. While I was there, there were whispers amongst the crowd.
I only caught certain fragments, but that’s okay, It was enough to hear them say:
“’Crazy’” “’insane.’” “’Witch.’” “’Trouble.’” “’That Brandon girl! Did you hear what she did to sweet young Madison?’”
I laughed when I heard ‘witch’. I’ve been called many things, but ‘witch’ was never one of them!
I laughed and shrugged it off. I danced with everyone that wasn’t from Biloxi and had a good time. My parents thought I didn’t hear what was whispered, and it’s okay for them to think that. They think they can protect me. That’s fine. They think that just because I am short that I am still five. That’s fine. Im moving on…someday.
Im moving on…eventually.
Im moving on…after I forget what happened:
I had just finished dancing with some nice fellow. He was showing quite an interest in me. And I was interested enough in him. We were standing on the side watching some others dancing and we were talking about our childhood and our families. Of course I didn’t bring up the fact that I have premonitions or that the town thinks im Crazy. I was laughing. And he was laughing and smiling…at ME!!! A man outside of my family was pleased with ME! Maybe Im not Mary…maybe im Alice. Alice fits, right? Alice is exciting and sure of herself, Alice has no enemies and can do nothing wrong! Alice is friendly and…loved.
Anyway, he went to go get us some drinks and he had been gone for a while so I turned around to see what was keeping him, my friend. I looked and saw him standing at the drink table talking to the village gossip monger. He looked then at me. I waved and smiled. He immediately turned and ran out of the hall.
I’ll never be sure why he ran. But that look in his face will never leave my mind. It was the look that Cinderella must have gotten when other royals found out she used to be a maid. It was a look that said ‘Geez-what-is-wrong-with-me?-I-was-just-talking-to-an-insane-freak!’.
And I’ll never be sure why I cried. I was a young, pretty girl unescorted at a dance. He should have liked me. We should have gotten to know each other. He should have known that I wasn’t crazy. I was just….just what? Maybe I am crazy. I drive everyone I love from me.
Now I know I am not Alice. I don’t deserve a name like that.
I am Mary. What am I? Am I crazy?
